Foam and fun at Cub Scouts' car wash

AMENIA — Cub Scout Pack 29 of Wassaic took advantage of the warm weather Sunday, April 19, to hold a car wash in the parking lot of the Amenia Town Hall.

Jonathan Lehning has been with Pack 29 for three years. He said he belongs to the Cub Scouts because he enjoys helping people. Although he thought washing cars was fun, he admitted that perhaps “spraying the other Scouts might be a little more entertaining. By the end of the day, most of the pack was thoroughly soaked.

This is the second car wash the pack has held. This year’s event coincided with the firehouse’s pancake breakfast, and there will be another car wash Sunday, May 3, at the Millerton Firehouse, to be held in conjunction with the fire company’s last pancake breakfast of the year.

As well as holding the car wash, the Cub Scouts continued their fundraiser for the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) chapter in Hyde Park by accepting donations of canned and dry food, blankets and pet supplies.

The Scouts also ran a deposit bottle and can collection, the proceeds of which will contribute to the Scouts’ awards at their annual dinner and at outdoor events held throughout the year.

Scoutmaster Christine Ford thanked the town of Amenia for letting them use its water supply as well as the fire department and all the people who came out for a wash.

Next up for the Cub Scouts is the Rail Trail Cleanup this Sunday, April 26. The Scouts have agreed to take care of a section of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, and a few times a year they get together to help out. The cleanup starts at 1:30 p.m., from the Rail Trial head on Mechanic Street.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
