Legislators fight to save LIFE STAR budget

Last week The Lakeville Journal reported that Gov. M. Jodi Rell was proposing significant cuts to state aid to Hartford Hospital’s LIFE STAR air ambulance program. The governor was proposing a $69,410 cut to this year’s spending plan (from a total of $1,388, 190). She also proposed putting an end to all state aid for the program in the next fiscal year, 2010-11.

State legislators including state Rep. Roberta Willis (D-64) vowed to fight the proposed cuts, and on Thursday, April 2,  the General Assembly’s Appropriations Committee ‘restored’ the money allocated for LIFE STAR services to the budget.

“LIFE STAR means too much for too many of the legislators,â€ Willis said, adding that she thinks the line item for the service “is pretty safe now.â€

State Sen. Andrew Roraback (R-30) concurred: “There is widespread recognition that LIFE STAR is a life-saving service.

The governor’s view is that “the funding represents a state taxpayer subsidy to the hospital and the hospital can raise money in a variety of ways.

Adam Liegeot, a spokesman at Rell’s office, said there will be further conversations between legislators and the governor’s office. Nonetheless, Willis expressed confidence that the funding will remain largely intact.

This year’s legislative session is scheduled to end on June 4; however, budgeting battles might force the lawmakers to extend their stay in Hartford.

“In past years with difficult budgets we’ve had to go into extra innings, Roraback noted.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
