Fathers, daughters dance for Children's Theater

FALLS VILLAGE —A father-daughter dance was held Saturday, March 14, at Geer Village in North Canaan, organized by Denise Cohn and Nancy Hodgkins.

The party was originally limited to just Falls Village residents but interest was high from area towns, and the invite list was expanded. About 25 fathers and 28 daughters attended; the MacElroy girls and Mairead Hodgkins and Hayley Kozlowski were sisters who shared dads.

Music was provided by a deejay, and “everyone danced and had so much fun, Hodgkins said.

The organizers also rented a limousine and chauffeured the girls around North Canaan.

“That was a big hit, Hodgkins said.

The mothers weren’t left out of the fun; many volunteered to help with setup and clean up. Hodgkins made corsages and boutonnieres.

“We’re working on organizing a mothers-and-sons dance next, Hodgkins. There will also be future father-daughter soirees.

These dances are fundraisers for the Falls Village Children’s Theater, which is opening its production of “Alice in Wonderland, directed by Lanny Mitchell, this weekend.

The show opens Friday, March 27, 7 p.m. at the Housatonic Valley Regional High School auditorium, with shows Saturday, March 28, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 29, at 2 p.m. Admission is free; donations are welcome.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
