Housy girls end regular season 16-4, boys have one more week

FALLS VILLAGE — The girls varsity basketball team at Housatonic Valley Regional High School ended their regular season last week with two very close games, both nail biters.

The girls varsity team ended with 16 wins and 4 losses. On Tuesday, Feb. 17, they were defeated at Wamogo by only 3 points, 41-38.

“Our team made a nice run, coach Kevin Riley said about the game. “We had a five-point lead at the half but they came back at us during the last two quarters. Paxton Thornton came close to winning the game for us with a nice three-pointer but it fell short. It was right on the money, but it caught the net.

Thornton lead the team with 13 points, Danielle Kearns scored 11.

The girls came back at Lewis Mills on Friday, Feb. 20, when they beat the buzzer and won 49-47.

“Both teams played very hard at the very end, Riley said. “It was a great game to watch and it’s a shame that there had to be a loser by the end of the game.

Thornton led the team with 17 points, Jackie Underwood scored 10.

The team is now set to play in both the Berkshire League and state tournaments. Schedules are still to-be-announced.

“We’ll just play one game at a time, Riley said. “That’s all we can do.

Meanwhile, the boys varsity team had an outstanding week, winning both their games.

On Tuesday, Feb. 17, the team played at home against Wamogo, shutting them down by a score of 72-43.

“Essentially the game was all over when we were up by 25 in the third quarter, coach Dave Battistoni said. “They just had a hard time getting the ball down to their side of the court.

Zach Williams scored 19 points,  Kyle Godburn scored 16.

The boys’ winning streak continued on Friday, Feb. 20, when the boys defeated Lewis Mills at home, 53-47.

“Lewis Mills is a very large team, Battistoni said. “We had them in the middle of the third quarter by 17 points. Then all of a sudden came that inevitable comeback. It came down to 2 points by the fourth quarter. Corey Christensen hit two huge foul shots at the end of the game, so we were able to hold on until the end.

Christensen was the big man of the game, scoring 21 points, while Williams scored 20.

The boys team will finish the regular season this week then head on to the league and state tournaments; both schedules are yet to be determined.

“The kids are excited, Battistoni said. “The fans are excited too.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
