Gilbert boys basketball falls to Housatonic, 67-52

WINSTED — The Gilbert Yellowjackets boys basketball team lost to Housatonic Valley Regional High School 67-52 at home Friday, Feb. 13.

Gilbert had a very strong start to the game, particularly while on the defensive. Yellowjacket John Tessman rooted himself beneath Gilbert’s basket, halting a number of Housatonic’s efforts, and endured the occasional thrashing to make big physical defensive plays. Gilbert captain Zac Tuozzo also performed well throughout the first, finishing the majority of the Yellowjackets’ offensive efforts to secure a 22-18 lead by the end of the quarter.

Fouls hit both teams hard in the second. The Yellowjackets were particularly good beneath the net, snagging rebounds, moving the ball to the outside, and putting up additional chances. Gilbert and Housatonic finished out the second in a 31-31 tie.

The Yellowjackets came out of the halftime break and went right back to work. Housatonic found a great deal of success from the outside, which allowed them to avoid the solid wall Gilbert had built around their net. It remained a three-point game through the majority of the third, until the Yellowjackets let things slip and gave up a number of turnovers and steals to Housatonic. Gilbert trailed 48-42 at the end of the third.

Gilbert continued to struggle in the fourth, seemingly not playing the same game they had through the first three quarters. Housatonic took advantage and built a commanding lead. The Yellowjackets seemed to find their stride again and started to narrow the gap, but foul troubles allowed Housatonic to hold onto their lead. Gilbert trailed by seven with a minute to go in the quarter. A late offensive blitz granted Housatonic the win, 67-52.

Tuozzo led Gilbert with 30 points, while scoring for the rest of his team was evenly dispersed. Kyle Jones and Eli Romero each had five, and Alec Brochu and Austin Brochu finished with four.

Gilbert plays at Northwestern Regional Friday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
