Slow start for Webutuck

WEBUTUCK — As athletic director and basketball coach Mike Riddle pointed out in an earlier interview, he intentionally schedules games against bigger and tougher schools at the beginning of the season, in order to get his team ready for league and division play.

“I see December really as preseason, he said.

Let’s hope the boys varsity team has learned some valuable lessons.

The Warriors suffered a 38-54 loss to Sullivan West Jan. 3, at home.

“Their heads just weren’t in the game, Riddle said, adding that while there wasn’t any excuse for the loss, his team was probably tired from playing three games in the past four days.

Martel Williams contributed 12 points and Pat Ivain, who just returned from a month-long injury, had 8 points and 6 rebounds.

“Our defense didn’t play bad, Riddle said, saying that Sullivan West has been averaging 74 points a game. “Our shots just weren’t falling. And if you have 25 turnovers you’re not going to win a game.

The loss brings Webutuck’s overall record to 1-5, with a 1-1 record in their league. They began divisional play last Tuesday, Jan. 6, against John A. Coleman Catholic, after this paper’s press time.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
