Santa coming to Main Street Saturday

WINSTED — The center of town will embrace the Christmas spirit tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 13) from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. as Friends of Main Street teams up with local merchants and the Winsted Elks Lodge to welcome Santa Claus and offer free treats and gifts for children.

Santa himself will be at Kathy’s Cupboard, 414 Main St., to spend time with local children who have their Christmas wishes ready. The store will be one of several downtown shops to offer discounts on a range of merchandise.

Outside, Friends of Main Street has organized horse-drawn carriage rides, hot chocolate, carol singing and marshmallow roasting, while downtown stores will feature refreshments, free gift wrapping and gifts with local flavor.

Charlotte Stowe of the Winsted Elks Lodge will be on hand, offering free hats and scarves to children. The smallest children will receive free mittens. The items were hand-sewn by Stowe with material donated by the Elks, and this is the third year that the lodge has participated in the giveaway.

"We gave away about 130 sets last year and we will have more than 100 this year," Stowe said.

Shoppers looking for local and unique gifts will find both new and used items, jewelry, food, clothes and furniture at participating stores, including the Dusty Rose Gift Shoppe, This ’n That, Health Food Corner, Winsted Pawn & Jewelry, Kelly’s Kitchen, Grow With Me Consignment and Christine’s Flower Shoppe.

In addition, the Friends of Main Street office, right next door to Kathy’s Cupboard, will have a new replica of St. Joseph’s Church on sale. The replica is the latest in a series dedicated to the Laurel City’s historic buildings. There are 13 wooden designs of landmarks in Winsted, available for sale at the Friends of Main Street Office, Christine’s Flower Shoppe, Winsted Town Hall and Kathy’s Cupboard.

Children, families and friends are invited to celebrate the season and the town in this holiday event. For more information, call the Friends of Main Street office at 860-738-3351.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
