Senior Game Night looks for new recruits

PINE PLAINS — It’s a small but consistent group of regulars who make their way over to the Lions Club pavilion two Fridays each month. One totes a briefcase full of supplies, and the others can always be counted on to bring their wit and gung-ho attitude. But player beware: These events can get pretty rough.

Yes that’s right, we’re talking about Senior Game Night, which takes place every first and third Friday of the month. Sponsored by the Pine Plains Lions Club, the pavilion provides the location for more than a few heated games of pinochle, Scrabble and Chinese checkers.

“It’s a great time, said Connie Nuccio, who was concentrating hard to remember which suit had last been put down in a game of Crazy 8s.

For all the cross-table banter and teasing remarks, everyone at Senior Night agreed that it was an event they always looked forward to. It was laughs, more laughs, and good-hearted grumbles as players were forced to draw card after card from the community pile.

While pinochle seems to be the game of choice (“We all go nuts for that, noted John Pindt, who keeps a notebook filled with scores dating back three years. It’s a large notebook, to say the least), every attendee seemed up for anything, including a few more members.

“We have our regulars, and there are people that have come for a night or two, but we’d really like to get more people showing up every time, replied Judith Pindt.

Members were in for a special treat last Friday, Nov. 21. As a surprise, Girl ScoutsTroop 10-514 provided a turkey dinner with mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans and soup for everyone involved. The Scouts are working on their community badges, and Friday night was the first of six different events that the troop will volunteer for before earning the badge.

Jennifer Pindt, who is one of the organizers of Senior Game Night, said the event is free for anyone who would like to join. Last year a few events were held, but last month Game Night was started up again and everyone is hoping that attendance will grow.

Senior Game Night is held at the Lions Club pavilion on the first and third Friday of the month at 4 p.m. Players can stay as long as they’d like, and games are known to run until 8 or 9 p.m. Usually a crockpot of soup and coffee or tea is provided, and players are welcome to bring their own sandwiches as well.

More information on Game Night is available by calling 518-929-1392.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
