Arthur Russell Jones


SALISBURY — Arthur Russell Jones, 86, of 17 Cobble Road, died quietly and with great dignity at home on Friday, Nov. 7, 2008. He was the husband of the late Marjorie Jones.

He was surrounded by loved ones and his beloved cat, Creampuff.

Mr. Jones was born Oct. 3, 1922, in New York City, the son of Arthur Russell Jones and Helen (Parker) Jones. He lived in Far Hills, N.J., until the death of his parents, at which time he and his brother, Foxy, moved to Salisbury.

He attended the Malcolm Gordon School, St. Paul’s School and Harvard University. He was a veteran, having served in the Army Air Corps as a flight instructor during World War II. On VE Day, while stationed in Nashville, Tenn., he met his future wife, Marjorie, and they married in 1946.

Arthur was general manager of the House of Herbs and later worked in advertising sales for The Lakeville Journal.

In his later years, he became an avid fan of his grandchildren’s sports activities. In 1998, he received the Fan of the Year Award at Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

Mr. Jones was a man of great wit, warmth and character. He was comfortable in any setting and had a wide variety of friends and interests. He enjoyed playing golf, bowling and playing baseball with local teams in the 1950s. He loved watching football, especially the New York Giants and the Harvard-Yale game.

He is survived by his brother, Foxhall P. Jones and his wife, Kitty, of Salisbury; two daughters, Nancy Bayersdorfer and her husband, David, of Lakeville and Leslie Allyn and her husband, McGee, of East Canaan. He will be greatly missed by his beloved grandchildren, Lauren Allyn Clarke of Leesburg, Va., Matthew Allyn of New Hartford, Cara (Bayersdorfer) Kenney of Roanoke, Va., and Jordan Bayersdorfer of Atlanta, Ga. He was blessed to be the great-grampa of Jack and Colin Kenney and Katie and Will Clarke.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 28, at 4 p.m. at St. John’s Church in Salisbury. All other services are private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Hospice Program of SVNA, Salmon Kill Road, Salisbury, CT 06068.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
