Town meeting in North Canaan Nov. 18

NORTH CANAAN — The annual town meeting will be held Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

The agenda will be a fairly unassuming one. It includes three standard items:A listing of banks and depositories for town accounts will be up for consideration by voters, as well as approval granted to the Board of Selectmen to borrow funding as needed, and the Annual Report.

The latter is a compilation of reports from the various town offices, boards, commissions, agencies, educational and care facilities, regional agencies and organizations. Every aspect of town and regional life is covered here.

Adult residents of North Canaan and those owning property valued at $1,000 or more are eligible to vote.

The report is published by the Board of Finance and includes the budget, capital expenditures and the audit of town finances from July 1, 2007, to June 30, 2008.

It is more than fitting that a photo of Francis McGuire graces its cover. McGuire, for many years a strong leader in town finance, died Oct. 4 after a battle with cancer.

The inside cover includes a great photo of McGuire striking a pose on a golf course. The dedication there describes his service to the town, and in government here and beyond. Despite his illness, it was only recently that he stepped down from the Board of Finance, having logged 21 years, much of that as vice chair, and the last three as chairman.

The dedication ends, "He brought a sense of humor to every occasion and he will surely be missed."

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
