Groceries to feed PTA funding

WEBUTUCK — Freshtown shoppers will be able to donate their "Green points" to local school teachers in a program initiated through the Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

Shoppers use their Freshtown card to earn points with each purchase. Accumulated points go toward different local organizations, including the PTA, local fire companies, several religious organizations, Saint Joseph’s School and Hearts & Hands International. Interested shoppers should simply ask the cashier to apply the PTA Freshtown card toward their purchase. Teachers can then shop from a special catalogue for school items they need.

Box Tops are also a good source of educational funds. Last year the tops raised $800 fot the PTA. Box Tops can be found on General Mills products and can be collected and sent in to Mary Ann Hope at the Webutuck Elementary School. The Box Tops are then traded in for a rebate check and used for school supplies and books.

Sue Pomeisl, PTA president for the past month, said, "Many years ago, I was the secretary. I have two children in the program, a senior and a fourth grader."

Pomeisl says her plan is to "stick with one theme per year and really focus on that in all of our efforts."

This year’s theme is promoting wellness and the PTA is holding meetings and assemblies to help parents "help themselves and their children learn about safety, wellness and health."

Interested parents and citizens can get information in a "Key Communicator" online newsletter put together by school district clerk Tracy Trotter, who can be contacted at ttrotter@webutuckschools.org.

"I don’t really have any concerns about the upcoming year," Pomeisl said. "I think the PTA is run fairly smoothly. I’d like to see focus on educational issues, as well as an advocacy group for each and every child."

Pomeisl said that she’d love to see parents volunteer either by showing up to the meetings or to help in any way they can.

"I’m more than willing to listen to new ideas. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know it all and I’m sure there are people out there that can help me, as well as the PTA," she added.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
