Child-care center director fired, no one's talking

WINSTED — Several parents of children at the Winsted Area Child Care Center on Prospect Street confirmed this week that Director Paige Corey was fired last Friday and told to clean out her desk immediately as staff members watched in shock.

Corey, who took over for longtime Director Barbara Adams in 2006 at the age of 24, was one of the youngest senior members of the staff at the center, but had earned the respect of workers and parents at the facility, which cares for approximately 70 children at the main building on Prospect Street and more than 100 other children in the Before and After School Education (BASE) program on Lake Street.

Though many people are aware of Corey’s termination, no one has agreed to speak on the record about it. “It’s all been very hush-hush, said one parent. “I don’t think anyone knows why she was fired. I don’t even think Paige knows. Another parent said staff members were crying Friday as Corey left the premises.

Repeated calls to members of the child-care center and members of its board of directors went unreturned this week. Staff members said they could not discuss the issue and said they would ask someone to return calls. Corey could not be reached for comment.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
