Pink's NFL Picks 10-3

Last week: 8-5; for the season: 37-23.

Pick of the week: 1-0; for the season 2-1.

I’m certainly not setting the world on fire, but let’s just say I’m surviving. I did manage to sneak in my Pick of the Week, but the Jags needed overtime to accomplish that.  Now you know why I dislike the Broncos, especially their coach. How can the lowly Chiefs hammer them like they did? Three cheers for the Redskins beating the Cowboys, even though they cost me a pick.

We’re entering a week where there are games between teams that are tough to figure out, which only adds intrigue to the process.  Let’s get on with it.

Sunday, Oct. 5

Chicago at Detroit: This is one of those hard-to-pick games I mentioned, only because the Bears are up and down and Detroit will be playing its first game since the firing of Matt Millen.  The Lions give up a lot of points, so I’ll go with Chicago, 21-17.

San Diego at Miami: Here’s another game between two teams that are hard to figure.  The Dolphins killed the Pats and had a week off, while San Diego won their second in a row after two tough losses to start the season.  What does that mean? I’ll go with the Chargers, 31-13.

Atlanta at Green Bay: Falcon QB Matt Ryan is taking his lumps, as is the Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers. Overall, the Packers seem to be the stronger of the two teams, so I’m taking Green Bay, 27-20.

Seattle at N.Y. Giants: Seattle remains a mystery, while the Giants must get past the distraction created by Plaxico Burress.  The Seahawks rarely play well on the road and the Giants are coming off a bye week.  I look for the Giants to play real well in a 30-14 win and that’s my Pick of the Week.

Tennessee at Baltimore: The Ravens lost a tough one in OT against the Steelers and must now try and get ready on short notice for the Titans.  I love rooting for Tennessee and I’m not about to stop now.  Titans win this one, 17-13.

Indianapolis at Houston: The Colts are coming off a bye week, while the Texans lost in overtime in Jacksonville. This has the makings of a good game and I smell an upset.  I’ll go with the Texans, 20-17.

Kansas City at Carolina: To say the least, it’s hard to get a read on the Chiefs.  As for Carolina, they’re not setting the world on fire, but they are 3-1.  KC showed a renewed running game, but they will need more than that to win. I like Carolina, 24-10.

Washington at Philadelphia: After this past week’s results, you have to wonder just how good the Redskins are. The same goes for the Eagles after their loss to the Bears.  Assuming Brian Westbrook returns for the Eagles, I think that gives them the edge. I’ll take the Eagles, 24-20.

Tampa Bay at Denver: I’m not real big on either team, but you must give credit to head coach Jon Gruden and his Bucs. As for the Broncos, this is a game that will help everyone figure out if they are a legitimate contender or not.  Denver at home is normally a safe pick, so that’s how I’m going. Broncos, 24-20.

Cincinnati at Dallas: If the Cowboys lose this game there should be an investigation.  Dallas wins big, 37-24.

Buffalo at Arizona: The Cards showed signs of life to start the season, but once again it appears that their sub-par defense will lead to their demise.  The Bills continue to find ways to win and I think they will again this week. I’ll take Buffalo, 27-23.

New England at San Francisco: It’s almost impossible to think of the Pats losing two in a row, but it could happen.  As for the 49ers, they are improving, but I don’t think they’re ready for the Patriots coming off a bye week. New England grinds out a 17-10 win in this one.

Pittsburgh at Jacksonville: The Steelers managed to come away with a key win on Monday night but have had their share of troubles against the Jags.  I rarely pick against my Steelers, but going on the road against another rough-and-tumble defense could be asking too much.  Please forgive me, but I do like the Jags in this one, 21-17.

Monday, Oct. 6

Minnesota at New Orleans: This should be a good game, but the Vikings offense doesn’t appear ready to go toe to toe with the high-flying Saints attack.  The Vikings “Dâ€ may slow down New Orleans, but in the end the Saints come out on top, 24-17.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
