Elementary schools have new principal

WEBUTUCK — The search is over for a new Webutuck and Amenia elementary schools principal, as Kathleen McEnroe will take over the position from outgoing Principal Joel Freer on Monday, Sept. 1.

If her name sounds familiar to district residents, it should. McEnroe served as principal from 2000 to 2002 at both Amenia and Millerton Elementary school buildings.

"I’m very excited to be back in the Webutuck district," McEnroe said Monday, Aug. 18, before a Board of Education meeting. "I love the small community as well as the closeness of the staff and the parents."

McEnroe has served as principal for the Ralph R. Smith Elementary School in Hyde Park for the past six years. She was born and raised in Westchester and went to Southern Connecticut State University for her undergaduate work. She received her graduate degree from The College of New Rochelle and taught special education in the Bronx school district for a number of years.

"My goal is to work with the district and to improve the education for all of our children, whether they are here or coming to us in a few years," McEnroe said.

Dawn Marie Klingner, a district parent who was on the principal selection committee, said she was very happy with the selection of McEnroe.

"I think district parents are very excited to have her back," Klingner said. "We had a lot of strong candidates for this position, and I think we chose the best one. I think she has a great personality and anyone would love to run up to her in a time of need."

"I just can’t wait to start," McEnroe said.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
