Life at Lake Wononscopomuc

Opportunities abound here at Lake Wononscopumuc, "the lake," in July and August. The morning brings fishermen (and fisherwomen and fisherchildren) eager to catch "a keeper." Dedicated swimmers and families begin to arrive. Some stay just long enough to eat lunch or swim a few laps, others remain until the gate closes. Blankets mark territory, but there are no boundaries. Toddlers share pails and shovels, children play games in the water, teens gather and chat and adults swap books. Conversations are plentiful (Do those teens know we can hear what they’re saying while on the big raft?!).

The staff, including Stacey Dodge, Lisa McAuliffe, and their crews, keep things running smoothly. In the spirit of community, they work hard to provide us with a safe place to create memories.

Some exciting events occurred at the lake this past week. Lifeguard hopefuls who are now in the "I swam the lake" club were greeted at the shoreline and applauded for their efforts. New residents were introduced (sticker # 600 was issued). Swimming and tennis lessons began.

Old friends caught up on the months gone by. Construction of a small basketball/wall ball court commenced. Things change here, but somehow it is still the same...in a wonderful "comfort zone" sort of way.

Our Salisbury Swim Team members practice each day and compete twice a week. They are definitely a team. New members are encouraged by returning swimmers and coaches and rivals race in a friendly fashion. Most noticeable are the individual improvements made. What a difference a year makes. The scared "8 and under" swimmer is now the first one on the dock and the hesitant preteens write fun messages on their backs. You see smiles and hear cheers and laughter as the children run to and from their races.

Neophyte sailors are taught the specifics prior to each day’s sail. They listen and anxiously await their time on the water. Last week’s group encountered everything from no wind, to choppy waters and rain. They ended their session Friday with a race and returned the boats more smoothly than they had on Monday. Success! Ten students, but many knew of their accomplishments.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
