Butler is intern for Journal

Paxton Butler joins The Lakeville Journal this week for a summer internship.

This coming year, he will be a sophomore at McGill University in Montreal.

"I am currently majoring in psychology with a minor in English literature. I was born in Massachusetts, but grew up in Shekomeko, N.Y. Since I am one of the many college students that does not have a clue about what I want to do with my life (and because I was fed up with building stone walls) I decided to try something new and intern at The Lakeville Journal.

"I didn’t know what to expect when I started. To be honest I only ever read a local paper to look for movie times, but after spending only three days here I realized something important about this paper.

"When I saw the name of an old teacher in a file I was going through I excitedly read the article. That article made me realize something that has been reinforced over the past few days. Before that article, when I read a newspaper I had the goal of looking smart and well-informed when I talked about current events. Now, when I read an article in The Journal it’s because I actually care about the material.

"My friends in college might not care. But I do. I care because the articles published in this paper reflect little parts of everyone in this community. This made me realize that, while the things that this paper reports aren’t Earth-shattering or of global importance, they are still important to everyone in this area because this area is our home."

Paxton is the son of Rob and Linda Pack Butler of Ancramdale, N.Y.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
