"Red, White & Blue: Patriotic Motifs in American Folk Art," is a fun show at


The Old Stone Store & Galleryi n Sheffield, MA, that kids in particular will get a kick out of.

 

Comprised of selections from the collection of part-time Great Barrington resident Stephen Leigh, the show includes old and new folk art and memorabilia that are, well, red, white and blue.

That means everything from a wonderful papier mâche sculpture of Betsy Ross, an Uncle Sam eating a striped blueberry pie, WWI posters, barbershop poles. There are, of course, numerous flags, a patriotic Raggedy Ann and Andy, as well as stamps, wall hangings, bird houses and more. Under the auspices of the Sheffield Historical Society, the store portion of the gallery includes numerous items for sale made by local artisans.The Old Stone Store is in the heart of Sheffield village on Main Street. If you didn’t get a chance to tour Lakeville’s galleries on Gallery Night, May 24, by all means visit them while their current shows are up. You won’t be disappointed. At the White Gallery, temporarily relocated (due to fire damage) at the rear of the Boathouse restaurant, "The Art of the Print — Works on Paper" includes pieces by Robert Natkin, Robert Kipniss, Pavel Roucka and Eve Stockton. On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
