Gertrude C. Tripp

CORNWALL — Gertrude (Castagna) Tripp, 95, of West Hartford, formerly of Cornwall, passed away peacefully at home on May 27, 2008.

She was born in North Canaan on June 9, 1912, to Mariangelina (Vanoti) and August Castagna. One of 12 children, she is the last of her siblings.

Gertrude was the beloved wife of 43 years to Edward John Tripp, who died in 1975. She resided in Cornwall for more than 70 years. She and Edward raised two daughters, Geraldine and Lucinda.

She was a faithful and devoted member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church and an active member of the ladies’ guild.

For many years, Gertrude and Edward owned and operated the Goshen Package Store. Gertrude was employed at Salisbury Bank and Trust Co., from which she retired.  She then spent many days at the Bargain Box in Sharon.  Gertrude loved and enjoyed her beautiful home in Cornwall, where she meticulously cared for her flower beds and lawn. She enjoyed entertaining her family and friends in her home.   

Gertrude is survived by  her daughters, Geraldine Van Schaack of West Hartford and Lucinda McInroy and husband, David, of Elberta, Ala.; her grandchildren, David Van Schaack and his wife, Amanda, Peter Van Schaack and his wife, Jeanne, Candace (McInroy) and her husband, Ramon Cruz,  Rebecca McInroy and David  McInroy and his wife, Anna; nine great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Clayton Van Schaack and Natasha Dillon, Kelly, Kerry and Jenna Van Schaack, William Cruz and Michael and Alexis McInroy.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, August, William, Charles, Guido, Edward, Arthur and Emil Castagna.  Her sisters preceding her were Marie Fracaro, Clara Watson, Vera Fallon and Elsie Mino.  

A Mass will be celebrated at St. Bridget’s Church, Cornwall Bridge, at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 30. Interment will immediately follow at St. Bridget’s Cemetery.

The Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon has charge of arrangements. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations  may be sent to The Little Guild of St. Francis, 285 Sharon-Goshen Turnpike, West Cornwall, CT 06796.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
