Pearson Middle School baseball moves to 4-0

WINSTED — The Pearson Middle School baseball team took advantage of timely hitting and solid pitching to defeat Thomaston, 5-4, Tuesday, May 13, at Walker Field in Winsted.

The Panthers carried a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning, but then things got interesting. Thomaston came up with two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-2. In the bottom half of the inning, Luke Snyder’s two-out single drove home Austin Brochu to stretch the Pearson lead to 5-2, proving to be the game winner.

Thomaston rallied again in the top of the seventh inning when they scored two more runs to make it 5-4. With just one out in the inning and Thomaston still threatening with a runner on third base, Pearson needed a big play and they got one.

A pitch from Nick Cripe, on the mound in relief for starter Bobby Smith, got by catcher Sean Kelleher and the Thomaston runner on third broke for home. Kelleher hustled to retrieve the ball and threw back to Smith, covering home on the play just in time to nip the runner for the second out, ending the Thomaston rally.

Pearson’s Smith was sharp for the first four innings, striking out eight hitters and holding Thomaston scoreless. Cripe had a big two-run single for the Panthers and picked up the win in relief. Austin Brochu chipped in with two hits and scored twice.

"Thomaston is a well-coached team and it is always a pleasure playing against a team as disciplined as they are," said Pearson Head Coach Rob Colabella after the game. "It makes all of our ballplayers better for having taken the field against them."

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
