Village recognizes clerks for hard work and dedication

MILLERTON — "It seems like everybody has a week," Millerton Mayor John Scutieri said during the Village Board’s most recent meeting, held Monday, April 21, 2008.

That statement preceded the proclamation that May 4 through 10 will officially be Municipal Clerk’s Week.

"The office of municipal clerk is the oldest of the public servants," Scutieri said. "And they are ever mindful of the neutrality of their positions. I would like to extend our appreciation to Karen McLaughlin and Amber Jordan."

McLaughlin is village clerk; she has been with the village for five years. Jordan is deputy clerk; she has held that position for a year. Both women said they were appreciative of the mayor’s proclamation, and the sentiment behind it.

"It’s an honor, and it’s been a pleasure to work with the board," McLaughlin said. "They’re very progressive and I think they’re very much in touch with the community.

"I think people don’t realize the work that goes in to the village clerk’s job," she added. "You’re doing finance, elections, budgeting, billing. There are complaints and questions that come n regularly. It’s a very diversified job and it’s imperative to stay neutral."

Jordan said working as deputy village clerk has taught her how the village functions.

"It’s been a wonderful year," she said. "Karen has been great training me and getting me to learn all aspects of government."

As far as being recognized by what she described as a "great board," Jordan said she felt honored. Not only that, but the formal recognition of the clerks’ work could help the public understand how the clerks’ office functions, and what their duties entail.

"It’s great because he [the mayor] sees and the board sees what we do for our community, and it allows the community to know that we’re here for them," she said.

Both clerks may be contacted about village-related issues at Village Hall during the week at 518-789-4489. Their hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
