Gladys E. Hamilton

PINE PLAINS — Gladys E. Hamilton, 88, died on April 21, 2008, at Vassar Brother’s Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

 On Nov. 22, 1943, in New  York City she married James H. Hamilton Jr. They were happily married for 63 years. He predeceased her on Jan. 29, 2007.

She was born on Feb. 4, 1920, in Ireland, the daughter of the late Samuel and Barbara Lawson.  

She was a 1938 graduate of Pine  Plains Central  School.

Mrs. Hamilton was owner and operator of the Locust Lane Dairy Farm in Pine Plains, with her husband, James.

 She was a member of the Pine Plains Presbyterian Church and the Pine Plains Grange. She also enjoyed her animals, gardening and many years of square dancing and bowling.

She is survived by her devoted son and daughter-in-law, Robert J. and JoAnn Hamilton of Pine Plains; her grandchildren, Michael J. and Carrie A. Hamilton; two great-grandchildren, Reagan V. and Mason J. Hamilton; and a sister, Eileen Dodson.  

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Hugh and Roland Lawson.

Calling hours are Friday, April 25, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Peck & Peck Funeral Home in Pine Plains.  Funeral services will begin at noon, the Rev. Carol Miller officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen  Cemetery in Pine Plains.

 In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Pine Plains Rescue Squad, PO Box 100, Pine Plains, NY 12567.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
