Lulia S. (Sabin) Curtis Berti

NORTH CANAAN — Lulia S. (Sabin) Curtis Berti, 85, of Granite Avenue Extension died April 18, 2008, at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Canaan.  

Mrs. Berti was the wife of Cilio Berti and the widow of Hugh D. Curtis, who died in 1960.  

She was born in Great Barrington on Jan. 29, 1923, the daughter of the late Inez (Russell) and Otho J. Sabin.

Mrs. Berti was the cafeteria manager of Salisbury Central School for 25 years. She also was employed as the tax collector for the town of Salisbury and was an assistant at the Scoville Library.

She was a member of the Salisbury Congregational Church, the Eastern Star, the Republican Women’s Club and the Salisbury Grange.

In addition to her husband Cilio of Lime Rock, Mrs. Berti is survived by her daughter, Louise A. (Curtis) Boehme of Post Falls, Idaho; her son, Hugh D. Curtis of North Canaan; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two stepchildren, Barbara Hermann of Burlington, Conn.,  and John Berti of Medfield, Mass., and their families.  

Mrs. Berti was predeceased by her granddaughter, Dawn M. Curtis.

Funeral services were held April 21. Burial was in Grassy Hill Cemetery in Falls Village. Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home.

The opening event for the Bang Family Concert Series at The Smithfield Church on Saturday, May 4, celebrated the festive Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo, with a performance by the popular husband-and-wife guitar duo, Judy Handler and Mark Levesque. Volunteers rescue terrier in quarry

Northwest Regional Rope Rescue Team rappelled into the quarry at Mineral Technologies to rescue Rippy.

NORTH CANAAN — Rippy the terrier mix was found deep in Mineral Technologies’ quarry on Lower Road Tuesday, May 7.

After getting spooked on a Saturday afternoon walk, Rippy dashed away from his handler and was lost. Animal Control Officer Lyndsay Burr was notified Monday by a pedestrian who heard barking coming from the quarry.

KENT — Westminster school, from Simsbury, came to Kent and soundly defeated the Kent Lions Wednesday, May 1.

The game began quietly but at the end of the 3rd inning, the Westminster Martlets took a 2-0 lead, which grew to a 4-0 lead at the bottom of the fourth.
