Merchants' group wants to rack up advertisers with new card

MILLERTON — Millerton is on the map. The village has made it into Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel magazine as on of the top 10 coolest small towns in America.

Now those in Millerton can be on the map too, thanks to a new rack card being designed by the Millerton Merchants’ Association.

"The front will have the village logo and information about the village and lots of colors and new pictures of the village and surrounding area, as well as information on how to get here," Merchants’ Association Vice President Susan Schneider said, adding that there will also be links on the card directing readers to the www.millertonny.com Web site. "On the back there will be an actual map of the village with the businesses’ names and phone numbers, as well as their locations. We’re actually very excited about it."

Schneider said there will likely be about 50 to 60 businesses participating in the rack card, which is 4.25 inches by 11 inches. She called it a "pocket version" map of the village.

"If someone comes to the village and is walking up the street, they can have that all in their hands," she said. "It’s a wonderful marketing tool and is being distributed throughout the Hudson Valley, Litchfield County and Columbia County — so we’re actually kind of thrilled about this one."

The cost for businesses to be listed on the rack card is $75; 15,000 cards are being printed. The deadline to sign up for the card is April 1. For more information, call Schneider at 518-789-6603 or Millerton Merchants’ Association President Marty Reynolds at 518-789-6235.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
