FFA toys around at annual show

PINE PLAINS — More than 300 people attended the annual FFA Farm Toy Show and Auction March 15 at Stissing Mountain Middle/High School.

The event included farm toy vendors and displays with farm scenes.

All proceeds from the event went to the FFA and its local programs.

FFA member Ashley Bartholf, 13, said the organization has helped her learn leadership skills.

"The FFA helps us build new opportunities in life," Bartholf said. "It’s a good organization where people help each other."

FFA treasurer Kyle Walsh, 16, said he has learned that it's fun to help the community.

"I think we have had a great turnout for today," Walsh said. "We’ve had more attendance and vendors than previous years."

Paul Bikowsky from Madison, N.Y., sold a selection of tractor toys at the show.

"We sell a lot of John Deere toys because everyone relates that it’s the only company that hasn’t been bought out yet," Bikowsky said. "It’s a nice show and I’m glad to be here."

Toy vendor Louie Pokrywka of New Milford, Conn., said farm toys are not just for kids anymore.

"Year ago, adults would buy farm toys and tell people ‘It’s a present for my grandson,’ because they were all too embarrassed to say they were buying toys for themselves," Pokrywka said. "They were closet collectors. But it’s out in the open now and vendors and adults come to these shows to buy toys."

FFA Advisor Christine MacNeil said she was impressed with the turnout at Saturday’s event.

"We’ve got a good crowd," MacNeil said. "This got a good and different kind of clientele that kids can interact with."

Saturday’s event also included a kiddie tractor pull, where children ages 12 and under rode on pedal tractors pulling weight boxes.

"The kid who pulls the most weight wins a kiddie pedal tractor," MacNeil said. "I have a great FFA group this year, they are all working hard."

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
