Student Matt Kittredge Is Principal for a Day

WINSTED - Students at Northwestern Middle School were eagerly waiting the the start of school today, Friday, Jan. 25, as student Matt Kittredge was scheduled to become the school’s Principal for a Day.

Principal Candy Perez said Wednesday that she would hand over the reins to Kittredge, a 13-year-old eighth-grade student, at the beginning of the day. She will have him take over numerous administrative duties, including handing out hall monitor assignments and other scheduling tasks.

Matt won the honor of becoming principal for a day after collecting donations to Northwestern’s fall turkey basket drive. The middle school works throughout November to put together more than 40 turkey baskets that are delivered to needy residents in the school district.

Perez offered a new incentive this year, with the student showing the most effort being allowed to take a seat at her desk for the day.

Kittredge said Wednesday that he doesn’t plan to pull any stunts as the principal, like letting everyone out of school early. "I don’t think they would let me do that anyway," he said.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
