Jenny Ann (Merritt) Harmon


AMENIA - Jenny Ann (Merritt) Harmon, 54, died Jan. 21, 2008, at home.

She was born Dec. 17, 1953, in Steuben, Maine, to Ann-Sofi and Guy Merritt. She moved to Stockbridge, Mass., in 1962, then to Hartsville, Mass., where she attended the South Berkshire Regional School District. She graduated in 1972, then attended Springfield Tech.

She joined the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserves as a training specialist and medical illustrator, and served from 1976 to 1984.

From 1984 to 1998, she attended various art schools and traveled extensively. She graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1988, and majored in visual arts and psychology. In 1998, she graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a graduate certification in special education.

Ms. Merritt went on to teach art at The Kildonan School in Amenia, and for 10 years was the art department chair.

She is survived by her son, Aaron Harmon of Goshen; her former husband, David Harmon, also of Goshen; two sisters, Karen Bickford of Dunmore, W.Va., and Lois Turner of Egremont, Mass.; three brothers, Delano Merritt of Brewer, Maine, Wade Merritt of Alburg, Vt., and Dean Merritt of Mechanicsville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her older sister, Frances Tina Merritt-Cohoon.

A celebration of life will be held at The Kildonan School dining hall, Morse Hill Road in Amenia, on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to The Kildonan School Art Department, 425 Morse Road, Amenia, NY 12501.

Valentine Funeral Home in Millerton has charge of arrangements.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
