Hockey co-op dominates Norwalk

SALISBURY - The Housatonic/Northwestern Regional 7 co-op hockey team dominated Norwalk last Friday night, Jan. 4, at the Salisbury School en route to their fourth win of the season and third consecutive victory.

While the scoreboard read 8-0 at the end of the final period, the game seemed to be over after the first, which saw the co-op team score four unanswered goals.

Despite the lopsided score, Norwalk still managed to keep the packed audience in the game by taunting Housatonic/Northwestern players. That elicited thunderous boos - and subsequent cheers each time a Norwalk player was escorted to the penalty box - from the large home crowd.

The co-op team's record now stands at 4-1.

The shutout on Friday, a combined effort from junior goalie Kevin Diamond and freshman goalie Zach Marcus, is their second in the last three games.

"Overall we played very well," said head coach Dean Diamond in an interview on Monday morning. "I was able to get my back-up goalie in the game for the first time this year and I got my freshman players into the game in shifts.

"I am very happy with the way my third line has played this season. Ed Ustico, Cole Liebrock and Ben Marcus have done a great job holding their own and their play makes the whole team stronger."

One down point in an otherwise successful game for the co-op was an injury to leading scorer Chris Bellanca, who dislocated his shoulder at the end of the second period. Bellanca sat out the third period; however, he is feeling better and is expected to see playing time this Wednesday against Tri-Town.

Jonny Habacker had a hat trick in the game, scoring a goal in each of the game's three periods. Teammate Clayton Wilburn scored two of his own in the first period.

Bellanca also scored in the first period, with Cody Riva and Sam LeGeyt contributing single goals in the second period. For LeGeyt, a sophomore, it was the first goal of his high school career.

Ahead on the schedule: the Housatonic/Northwestern hockey team will face two very tough division one teams, Tri-Town and Avon, in a series of three games.

"We've had some excellent practices that the guys are really enjoying," Diamond said. "We're working hard and we look forward to competing with some of the tougher teams that are out there."

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
