Housy girls basketball captures fifth win

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic varsity girls picked up their fifth win of the season by defeating Northwestern Regional 7 from Winsted 57-43 at home this past Saturday.

"I think the team bounced back well after a disappointing loss to Wamogo on Thursday," Head Coach Kevin Riley said. "They really put forth a solid effort to get the win against Northwestern."

The girls played sparkling defense, particularly in the second half. Going into halftime, the girls led Northwestern by four points, 21-17. Within five minutes, the team staked themselves to an 11-point lead. The girls held Northwestern to just 26 points in the second half. Northwestern never came within 10 points of the Housatonic lead.

"The team did an excellent job mixing it up on defense," Riley said. "They played man and zone defenses and were really able to put pressure on the offense."

Housatonic’s offense also played a fine game, capitalizing on the outstanding defensive play in the second half to slam the door on Northwestern. The team expanded their lead by as much as 18 points and ultimately won the game by a 14-point margin.

Housatonic center Paxton Thornton, a junior who has started for the varsity team since her freshman year, enjoyed a standout game on both sides of the ball, contributing eight rebounds and 30 points toward her team’s win.

Team captain Lily Belter added nine points of her own as well as 12 rebounds. Sawyer Thornton, also a team captain, scored six points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Starting guard Hannah Savage had eight points and six assists, while forward Sarah Godburn and team captain Elissa Whitmore both netted two points toward the win.

"I’d like to work on a more balanced scoring approach," Riley said about Saturday’s game. "However, we distributed the ball well and the score total was excellent, so all in all this win was another step in the right direction."

The girls varsity basketball team record now stands at 5-2 with 13 games left in their season. Their next game will be Thursday, Jan. 3, against Terryville at home at 7 p.m.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
