Coupon Days encourages shopping locally

MILLERTON — As November ends and December starts, there will be even more of an incentive to shop in Millerton. That’s because on Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1, there will be Coupon Days, thanks to the efforts of the Millerton Merchants and Business Group.

"We think this is a great chance for people in the area to shop local and support the shops," Millerton Merchants and Business Group Vice-president Susan Schneider said. "This is our way of saying thank you [to the community] and have a happy holiday season."

In total, 41 shops will participate in the event, offering anywhere from 10 to 25 percent off merchandise. On Dec. 1, shops will stay open until 7 p.m. The businesses will offer refreshments and cheer to holiday shoppers, along with the discounts. For a listing of the stores that are participating, visit the merchants Web site millertonny.com.

This is the second year the village held Coupon Days. The first time it was scheduled was in 2005. Last year there were many requests, from both merchants and shoppers, to have the event return. Now that the merchants group has taken it over, there are plans to schedule Coupon Days on an annual basis.

"We will do it again every year now," Schneider said. "We’re trying to bring business of any kind to Millerton and to let people know what a great village this is, and that you can really do all of your holiday shopping here.

"Your basic needs are covered in the village, from Saperstein’s to Oblong Books, to the Village Antique Center, everything is covered," she said. "You can get great Christmas gifts here."

BW’s Eagle Eye owner Barbara Walker will be one of many participating in Coupon Days. She’s had her store for 16 years, and said that bringing the town’s merchants together for such an event is an innovative idea that could help the retail community.

"I’m really hoping that lots of people come into town," she said. "I think it seems to be sort of a leg up to our customers to be able to have a discount.

"It’s a good idea, and a great way to get people into town," she added. "It’s a nice sort of ‘how do you do’ to our customers and perhaps we’ll get some new customers. I think it’s a very nice thing, and the fact that it is town-wide will probably make it a lot better, and that everyone is participating makes it a good idea."

Although the actual coupons will be available through multiple advertisements in area publications, Schneider said there’s no need to bring them in. Just show up at the stores and start shopping, and the merchants will know what to do. The merchants are setting their own discounts for their own stores, so ask ahead what those savings may be as they will change from shop to shop.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
