Agency to hold meeting on senior concerns

AMENIA — The Association for Senior Citizens will hold a public meeting today, Nov. 15, at Town Hall from 1 to 3 p.m.

According to board member Linda Clark, the meeting will assess the concerns, needs and issues of seniors in the area.

"The question is if more services are needed in the area," Clark said. "We are meeting in different areas in Dutchess County to also see if the issues are all the same, or do other needs rise to the service depending on where you live?"

She said that the association currently offers services in Poughkeepsie and Rhinebeck, but not in Amenia.

"There are senior centers in Amenia, but not by us," she said. "We are trying to reach out to the eastern corridor of the state with this meeting."

She said that in previous meetings, seniors have issued many concerns about transportation and remaining independent at home.

"Transportation to medical appointments and stores has been an important issue," she said. "One of the ideas in prior meetings would be a place for seniors to call if they needed some help on issues. Possibly a clearinghouse or support group."

She said that she hopes for good attendance at the meeting.

"We hope seniors are willing to share their concerns with us," she said.

For more information, call the association at 845-473-1265.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
