A family food drive teaches children to care

CORNWALL — Quinn Hedden is a beautiful 2-year-old. Despite being in need of a nap one recent morning, she allowed herself to be interviewed, or at least be talked about in front of her.

This weekend is the second annual food drive in honor of her birthday. She had no clue just before turning 1 last Dec. 8 why her family — Erin and Brad, and 3-year-old sister Reilly — was sitting in front of the West Cornwall Fire House while generous folks dropped off cans and boxes of food.

"She’s starting to learn about helping others," said her mom. "Her sister does Reilly’s Lemonade Stand, and understands simply that selling it helps sick kids feel better. Quinn knows what it means to help others."

What her parents want is for their children to have hearts as beautiful as their adorable faces.

Hedden was inspired by her own difficult childhood, and remembers how her family depended on the generosity of others.

"People tend to look out for number one. But I remember how others helped us, and number one turns out a whole lot better if you consider everyone else around you."

The Heddens are not sure what to expect when they post themselves in front of Baird’s Store from 9 a.m. to noon this Saturday (Nov. 3). Last year, one man came back with a bag of groceries after finding out what they were doing.

Brad Hedden, an electrician, would go to homes to work and have groceries handed to him.

Whatever they collect will make a difference, and be donated to food banks in the area.

KC Baird has also offered to leave a grocery cart inside at the store for anyone who would like to donate but can’t make the 9 a.m. to noon time slot.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
