New Hartford Seeks Waiver For Salt and Sand Storage

NEW HARTFORD — The town of New Hartford has requested a temporary waiver from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to use the town garage site for one more year for salt and sand storage.

Currently the town garage is located on the banks of the Farmington River. There is a concern about storm water management and the effects of salt and sand on the river’s ecosystem.

Aware of the problems that can arise from continued salt and sand storage at the current location, First Selectman Bill Baxter has been working to find a new location for not only the salt and sand shed, but for the entire town garage.

"The whole town garage complex is located on the river. It’s 34 years old and it is inadequate for the amount of equipment that we now have," said Baxter.

"We are looking at an additional site, a new site in the industrial park," said Baxter. "That won’t be available for a salt/sand shed until next year."

As of Wednesday afternoon, the DEP has not granted New Hartford a temporary waiver. The next scheduled Board of Selectman’s meeting is Monday, Oct. 15, where an update may be given.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
