Falls Village candidates for selectmen run unopposed


Following are brief biographies of some candidates for the Board of Selectmen in the town of Canaan (Falls Village), listed in alphabetical order. Questionnaires were sent to all candidates; not all the candidates chose to respond.

Former member and chairman of the Housatonic River Commission; former chairman of the town of Canaan Board of Education; former member of the Board of Finance; former first selectman; selectman since 2005; member of the Board of Directors of the Canaan-Falls Village Historical Society.


Incumbent First Selectman Patricia Mechare is running again for office, and is unopposed.

Selectmen candidates are incumbents Charles Lewis (D) and Peter Lawson (R). Both are unopposed.


 

 


A brief statement:


I’m committed to fiscal responsibility within the context of a changing population with different priorities than in the past. It is a continuing challenge to maintain town services and provide the things that make this town special: a great school, day care, senior center, library, new children’s theater.

 

 


Bio:


My wife, Margo, and I raised four children here. After retiring from state service (1997), I’ve maintained a commitment to serving the town that I love.

A brief statement:


I consider myself fortunate to have grown up, had a career, raised a family with Curt and been able to give back to this wonderful area. Continuing to work cooperatively in the public and private sectors to make Falls Village what its citizens want it to be is the most important goal.

 

 


Bio:


Married 37 years to Curt; three grown children. North Canaan native. Graduate of Housy. BSE/MSE degrees. Taught 37 years in Kent, retired in 2005.

NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins St. passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
