All About Fantasy and Unbridled Passions

The St. Lawrence String Quartet will perform at Tannery Pond in New Lebanon, NY, Saturday, Aug. 4, at 8 p.m. The program includes Franz Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet in C-Major, Op. 77, No. 1; the Shostakovich String Quartet No. 8, in C-Minor, Op. 110; and the String Quartet in D-Major, by Cesar Franck. The Berkshire Choral Festival’s fourth program at the Berkshire School in Sheffield, MA, will present Beethoven’s “Elegischer Gesang†(Elegiac Song) and “Choral Fantasy†in addition to Cherubini’s Requiem in C-minor, Aug. 4, 8 p.m. This program will also feature pianist Melvin Chen, who will be the soloist in the “Choral Fantasy.† Ticket prices are $25 and $40. Works by Mozart and Brahms will be performed Aug. 3, at 8 p.m., at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, in Norfolk, CT. Participating artists are Patti Monson, flute;  Humbert Lucarelli, oboe; Syoko Aki, violin; Koichiro Harada, violin; Jesse Levine, viola; Steven Doane, cello; and Andre-Michel Schub, piano. Saturday, Aug. 4, at 8 p.m., a program of “Music and Dance in New France†is on the menu with works by Lully, Couperin, Monteclair and Rameau performed by the  Baroque Ensemble. The summer music festival at Music Mountain, in Falls Village, CT, continues Saturday,  Aug. 4, at 6:30 p.m., and Sunday,  Aug. 5, at 3 p.m., with the Zemlinski String Quartet of Prague and pianist Pamela Mi Paul.

Aston Magna’s last summer program can be heard Aug. 3, at 8 p.m., at Bard College’s Olin auditorium, in Red Hook, NY, and Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. at the Daniel Arts center, Simon’s Rock College, Great Barrington, MA. Participating artists will be Daniel Stepner, violin; mezzo-soprano Deborah Rentz-Moore and sopranos Roberta Anderson, Dominique Labelle and Kirsten Watson, as well as alto Lynne Topgrove; tenor Frank Kelley; and bass-baritone David Ripley.

The concerts are titled “The Passion of Purcell†and will include a concert version of “Dido and Aeneas.â€

New productions of Alexander Zemlsinky’s two one-act operas, “A Florentine Tragedy†and “The Dwarf†will have their final performances Aug. 2 and Aug. 4 at 8 p.m., and  Aug. 5 at 3 p.m., at Bard’s Fisher Center.

The librettos of both operas are based on works by Oscar Wilde. They are directed by Olivier Tambosi, who recently directed Janácek’s “Jenufa†at the Met and who is also one of the founders of Vienna’s Neue Opera. For tickets, call 845-758-7900 or go to www.fishercenter.bard.edu.

NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins St. passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

Bob was born Feb. 5, 1955 in Torrington, the son of the late Joesph and Elizabeth Pallone.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
