Harold J. Woodward


PINE PLAINS — Harold J. Woodward, 88, passed away on Feb. 2, 2007, at Sharon Hospital.

On Oct. 4, 1940, in Pine Plains, N.Y., he married Edith J. (Morill) Woodward. She survives him at home.

He was born on April 12, 1918, in Germantown, N.Y., the son of the late Hazel (Rockerfeller) and John Woodward.

Mr. Woodward worked for IBM in the Merritt Building in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

He served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was a member of the Pine Plains Presbyterian Church, a life member of the Pine Plains Sportsman’s Club, a life member of the Pine Plains Hose Company, and a member of Millerton American Legion Post #178.

Mr. Woodward enjoyed deep-sea fishing and was an avid hunter.

In addition to his loving wife of 66 years, survivors include a daughter, Sandy Caswell of Pine Plains; two sons and daughters-in-law, Alan "Woody" and Joan Woodward of Pine Plains, and David and Bonita Woodward of Westerville, Ohio; a sister, Mary MacGlashan of LaQuinta, Calif.; a brother, Robert Woodward of Red Hook, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service and burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Pine Plains Rescue Squad, P.O. 100, Pine Plains, NY 12567.

Arrangements are in the care of the Peck & Peck Funeral Home in Pine Plains.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
