Richard Weinstein


MILLERTON — Richard "Dick" Weinstein,79, of Millerton died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at the home of his daughter, Susan, in Ludlow, Mass. after a brief illness.

Born Sept. 4, 1927, in Sharon, he was the son of the late Rebecca (Spitel) and Harry Weinstein.

Mr. Weinstein graduated from Housatonic Regional High School and Union University Albany College of Pharmacy, where he received his degree in pharmacy in 1953. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Blue Devil (88th) Division and served in the ski troops in Triest and later was detached to the island of Lido, Italy, at the Rest Center in charge of civilian labor.

Mr. Weinstein worked at the Amenia Pharmacy and the Millerton Pharmacy and in 1955 purchased Strong’s Drug Store on Main Street in Millerton. The store was renamed North East Pharmacy and he worked there until Nov. 9, 2006.

While employed in Amenia, he met Augusta Schultz at the soda fountain there and the couple later married. Together they had two children, Jeffrey and Susan. Mr. Weinstein was an active member of The Order of the Eastern Star, the Masons, the Millerton Lions Club and had served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Village of Millerton. Nov. 9, 2006, the day he closed North East Pharmacy, was declared Dick Weinstein Day by the Village.

Mr. Weinstein is survived by his son, Jeffrey and his wife, Kathi, and grandson, Josh, of Copake, N.Y.; his daughter, Susan of Ludlow, Mass.; his sister, Mary Lewis of Millerton; and four nieces. He was predeceased by his brother, Henry of Dover Plains, N.Y., on Nov. 8, 2006. He is now reunited with his loving wife, who died on April 30, 2001.

Arrangements were under the care of Valentine Funeral Home, Millerton. A funeral celebrating Mr. Weinstein’s life was held at the Millerton Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Nancy Thorton McKenzie officiating. Internment followed at Irondale Cemetery.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
