Market's Last Day Dec. 31

CORNWALL — It has been an asset for many West Cornwall residents, who have grown accustomed to stopping by for a quart of milk, a bit of local produce, some deli meats or to do their weekly shopping.

But after three-and-a-half unprofitable years, West Cornwall Market owner K.C Baird is calling it quits.

The last day for the store in West Cornwall village will be Dec. 31.

The fact that Baird, experienced in the grocery business and willing to try new approaches, couldn’t make it work does not bode well for owners of other small area businesses.

He told The Journal this week he received quite a bit of local support, for which he is grateful. But it just wasn’t enough.

"I would see people go to the post office every day, but they never came in the store. It became a seasonal business, relying on tourists, and the season is really short here. July and August were the only profitable months, but that doesn’t make up for the other 10 months.

"If we were on Route 7, if more local people came in... I don’t know. It might have worked. But I lost a lot of my own money and it’s time to cut my losses. At least I have something to fall back on."

Baird will return to working with his brother at Baird’s General Store in Cornwall Bridge. He is also on the Board of Selectmen.

"On a positive note, I met a lot of people from West Cornwall that I didn’t know before. I appreciate their support, and I hope to see them down in Cornwall Bridge."

The market closing also signals the end of West Cornwall Video, which occupied the second floor. Baird said owner Susan Costello will not continue the business. All of the DVDs are available for discounted sale at Beads & Beyond in North Canaan. More than 4,000 titles remain at the Cornwall location, where they are availble for purchase whenever the market is open.

The building, which is leased to the market, is up for sale. The owner did not return a call for comment on a possible future use.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
