A 16-year-old dies in car crash at curve

SALISBURY — Stephanie Murphy, 16, of 164 Depot Hill Road in Amenia was killed last Friday, July 31, as the result of a car accident on Route 44 in Salisbury.

At approximately 8 p.m., Stephanie’s 1998 Volkswagon Passat was headed west toward New York. It had recently rained. She lost control of her vehicle on a curve, close to Wildcat Hollow Road. Her car went off the right side of the wet road, where it struck a large tree.

Murphy was transported by emergency personnel to Sharon Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at about 9:30 p.m.

Stephanie was born at Sharon Hospital on Oct. 14, 1992. She recently completed her junior year at Webutuck High School.

Funeral services were held yesterday, Aug. 5, at the Valentine Funeral Home in Millerton, followed by a celebration of life in the Webutuck High School cafeteria at 7 p.m. Donations to benefit the family may be sent to 164 Depot Hill Road, Amenia NY 12501.

Stephanie was the daughter of Jerry and Brandi-Ann Murphy and sister of Samantha. She is survived by family, friends and her dog, Punky. (A full obituary is on Page A10.)

This reporter met Tuesday with Brandi-Ann Murphy. In order to help others understand her memories of her daughter, and the kind of person Stephanie was, Murphy produced pictures of her daughter, at all ages, and suggested one look at Stephanie’s MySpace page, where Stephanie had posted quotes from John Lennon and Dr. Seuss, among others, as a representation of her beliefs.

â€œi can make anything fun, being bored is worthless,â€ Stephanie wrote about herself. “i do what i do because it makes me happy [...]â€

Finally, Brandi-Ann Murphy submitted a poem written by her husband, Jerry, for publication:

no bells

no whistles

no fear to the night

beyond what’s right

my baby took flight

with no lines in sight

I wish she was home

where we can hold her tight

just so you know

she kept moving forward

and never looked back

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
