Mary Louise Lippincott

WINSTED — Mary Louise Lippincott, devoted mother and grandmother, died suddenly Dec. 11, 2010. She was the loving wife of Robert W. Lippincott for 59 years.

Born May 21, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Louise (Zander) and Howard Hayes. She was a Rainbow Girl and a past Worthy Advisor.

Prior to her marriage, she was employed by Curtis Publishing in Philadelphia as a private secretary of the executive advertising director. Prior to their retirement, Mary and her husband, Robert, owned and operated Lippincott Van Lines in Winsted.

She was an active and devoted member of St. James Episcopal Church in Winsted.

She enjoyed bowling, playing piano, having coffee with her friends and especially spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was also an avid Celtics and UConn women’s basketball fan.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Linda Snyder and her husband, Robert, of Barkhamsted, Jeff Lippincott and his wife, Anne, of New Hartford and Wayne Lippincott and his wife, Kathy, of Barkhamsted; her sister, Edythe Hayes of Farmington; and her wonderful grandchildren, Chris and Elizabeth Snyder, Jeffery, Daniel and Catherine Lippincott and Sarah, Bobby and Johnny Lippincott.

Funeral services were held Dec. 15 at St. James Episcopal Church, Winsted. Burial will be held at Colebrook Center Cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 160 Main Street, Winsted, CT 06098. Visit an online guestbook at montano-shea.com.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
