Left, Justin Mohardt was the overall winner at the Lions Club home run derby, hitting 24 home runs. “If you want to hit a home run, you have to hit into it,” Mohardt said. “That’s all there is to it.” Right, Kurt Root, who won the 40-year-old and up category at the home run derby, hit five home runs. “If you want to hit a home run, you have to make good contact with the ball,” Root said. “It’s all about bat speed and a little bit of luck.” Photo by Shaw Israel Izikson
WINSTED — The rain held off Saturday, Aug. 11, for the Winsted Lions Club’s second annual home run derby at Walker Field.
Nonetheless, organizer Peter Cianciolo said weather forecasters calling for rain may have scared away potential participants in the benefit.
“The forecasters called for rain, rain and more rain up until the afternoon,” Cianciolo said. “It looks like the weathermen really killed us. But what can you do?”
Six participants took part in the derby, which was held as a benefit for the Lions Club Scholarship Fund and club activities.
