Cantaloupe or honeydew? Why not both!

How do you choose between a honeydew melon or a cantaloupe, especially at this time of year when they’re at their peak?

One way is by choosing whichever is riper at the time that you’re shopping. When you see the two types of melons sitting in side-by-side bins, pick up one of each and weigh them in your hand. The one that feels heavy, even a little overweight, is the one you should choose, because it’s ripe.

You can also rap on the melon with your knuckle. If it makes a dull noise, that’s another sign that it’s probably ripe. If the sound is hollow, it’s probably not ripe.
