Chicks: Cute but problematic

A lot of people seem to be buying live baby poultry right now in preparation for raising chickens so they can have fresh eggs from their own backyards.

Chicks are so cute and fluffy that it’s hard to believe that they could do any harm, but they can carry salmonella, which can cause diarrhea, vomiting and fever (the illness is most severe in infants and elderly people).

Salmonella can spread to the bloodstream in severe cases, and hospitalization is sometimes necessary. Serious cases are treated with antibiotics.
