Missing man found standing in swamp

NORTH CANAAN — An 87-year-old Geer Village resident who went missing early on the morning of May 27 was found nearly 10 hours later, waist deep in a swamp.

Leonard Trachtenburg, who State Police said has dementia and hearing loss, was hospitalized after his rescue, suffering from exposure and hypothermia. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Trachtenburg was described in a police missing person report as a loner who was unhappy being in a facility. He was discovered missing from his room at about 6 a.m. Sunday during a routine check by staff at the South Canaan Road facility.
