Lena (Sebben) Zavagnin

NORTH CANAAN — Lena (Sebben) Zavagnin, 87, of Granite Avenue Extension, died March 15, 2012, in Knoxville, Tenn.

She was the widow of Anthony Joseph Zavagnin, who died Dec. 11, 2010.

Lena was born July 10, 1924, in North Canaan, the daughter of the late Constantina (Pescadore) and Joseph Sebben.

Lena and Tony married on Nov. 27, 1948, and celebrated 62 years together.

Lena was the chief teller of the former Canaan National Bank. She was well-known to the children of the town as the “Lollipop Lady” as Lena would pass out lollipops at her teller station. Lena worked at the bank from 1968 through 1995.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church. Lena also enjoyed working in her garden and raising flowers.

Lena is survived by her daughter, Teresa and her husband, Peter Bogdanchik, of Knoxville; six grandchildren, Elise and Adam Bogdanchik, Laura Taylor and Anthony, Martina and Elizabeth Zavagnin; five great-grandchildren, Bennett, Cameron and Tate Bogdanchik and Jack and Andrew Taylor; her sister, Mary Woodman of Cornwall; and her three brothers, Mario Sebben and Domenic Sebben, both of East Canaan, and Guido Sebben of Torrington.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Lena was predeceased by her son, Joseph Zavagnin.

A Mass of Christian burial was held March 23 at St. Joseph’s Church with burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.
