The real tragedy of the border wall fight

The hope is that by the time this editorial is read, it will be outdated. That might sound odd, but considering it has to do with the 25-day partial government shutdown (as of press time on Tuesday, Jan. 15), we’re sure readers will understand. That the president has the country in this state of suspension is a disgrace. He’s let services lapse and workers go unpaid. All for a border wall no one is even sure is necessary.

It isn’t a wall. It’s a great, big boondoggle

Question: When is a wall not a wall?

Answer:  When it’s a boondoggle.

And what, exactly, is a boondoggle?  My dictionary defines a boondoggle as “a work or activity that is wasteful or pointless but gives the appearance of having value.”

Then, there’s this definition, even more applicable to the boondoggle at hand:

First, there was opium

The first in a series on opioid addiction

How do opioids relieve pain, cause euphoria and lead to an addiction that refuses to take “no” for an answer? How is it that in 2017, 72,000 Americans died of opioid drug overdose? What is the chemistry behind this catastrophe? Is there any hope of controlling it?

BIG batteries and Integration

Integration—it’s a word you hear everywhere these days. Electronics need to be integrated so that your phone can follow your email at the office, Alexa can meld your purchasing and entertainment needs, and so on. What people are beginning to discover, is that ancient systems can be integrated into the most modern developments and, together, they can bring greater efficiencies.

Pine Plains school renovation deserves support

Finding money to pay for goods and services is always a challenge for our school districts. Funding projects — no matter how essential — can be difficult at best.

In the Pine Plains Central School District, the Board of Education (BOE) is hoping that come Monday, Jan. 28, local voters will show their support for a special referendum to renovate the junior/senior high school auditorium.

What is bitcoin and how does it work?

Dear EarthTalk: How is it that bitcoin, a virtual currency that few of us have heard of and no one I know uses, is becoming a major contributor to carbon emissions?
