Money saved at school can now be spent on upgrades


NORTH CANAAN — An unexpected budget surplus of about $138,000 at North Canaan Elementary School (NCES) had the school board at its June 8 meeting looking at ways to spend part of it.

While the money legally must be returned to the town’s general fund, it has been established between the school and finance boards that the school can consider pre-buying supplies or completing capital projects on a reasonable basis.

The thinking is that most things will cost more down the road so it’s better to spend the money sooner rather than later if it is available.
