Government contracts should not be trade secrets

The CIA has secrets, and we tend to accept that, but what about your state health insurance exchange? Not only does it have secrets, it has “trade secrets.”

It may come as a surprise to you that the government has trade secrets. These are secrets the state of Connecticut can’t reveal, allegedly, because it would cost the government more if it did.

Gov. Dannel Malloy’s chief of staff recently received a promotion. He is now the president of the Board of Regents, which oversees Connecticut’s state universities and community colleges. 

Many will point to this as an example of old-fashioned, cynical political patronage — and they won’t be wrong — but this appointment is a case study in a far more significant problem: Connecticut’s dangerously underfunded pension system.

Sharon Hospital needs and deserves our support

letter to the editor from Liz Piel was published in the July 9 Lakeville Journal concerning six doctors leaving the Sharon Hospital medical staff. It paints a bleak picture, but I don’t think it is fair to the efforts of the administration, the medical and nursing staff, and the employees who all work hard to make the place meet the needs of our communities. 

Food for thought on the Region One School District

The superintendent of schools of Regional School District One and the towns of Canaan, Cornwall, Kent, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon has to be notified by Aug. 31 if there is to be a continuation of her employment. It is certain that her employment will be extended if she so chooses.
