Marian E. (Emmons) Pratt

CANAAN VALLEY — Marian E. (Emmons) Pratt, 93, of Canaan Valley died Aug. 16, 2017, at Noble Horizons in Salisbury. She was the widow of Roger Pratt, who died in 1988. 

A life-long resident of Canaan Valley, Marian was born in North Canaan, one of 10 children of the late Cora S. (Roger) and Donald J. Emmons.

Marian worked as a secretary for the former New England Lime Company, known now as Min-Tech. She was a graduate of Housatonic Valley Regional High School, in the second graduating class in 1941. 

Eloise Simpkin Cole

MILLERTON — Eloise Simpkin Cole died Sept. 14, 2017, as a result of injuries sustained in a brutal attack by a neighbor, in front of her home of almost 50 years in Davis Shores, St. Augustine, Fla. 

A vibrant, independent, and capable woman to the end, Eloise had celebrated her 98th birthday just two weeks prior with her family at St. Augustine Beach, where she swam in the ocean, read, talked with her great-grandson via FaceTime, and told stories of her incredible life over birthday cake and many candles. 

Blanche Bennett

ASHLEY FALLS — Blanche “Aunty Bea” Bennett, 91, a longtime resident of Ashley Falls, died on Sept. 18, 2017.  

Born Oct. 4, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Hazel and Rupert Stevens.

“Aunty Bea” worked for the postal department as clerk and then postmaster for more than 30 years in the Ashley Falls Post Office.  She also worked at Maplewood Fabrics, took care of many children and helped her husband run their plumbing company in Norfolk.  

Gordon H. Fellows

NORTH CANAAN — Gordon H. Fellows, 83, of South Canaan Road, died Sept. 13, 2017, at the Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of Kathleen (Boibeaux) Fellows. 

Gordon was born May 21, 1934, in Hartford, Conn., the son of the late Helen (Grosclaude) and Christian Jensen.

Janet Day

SHARON — Janet Gilsenan Driscoll Day, 86, beloved wife, stepmother, cousin and friend, died peacefully on Sept. 12, 2017, from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease, at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the loving wife of the late Robert A. Day, who died in 2011.

Janet was the only child of adoring parents Loretta Hulme and James William Gilsenan. Born on May 3, 1931, in Hicksville, N.Y., and raised in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, Janet attended Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School there.

Barbara Ann (Williams) Woodward

LAKEVILLE — Barbara Ann (Williams) Woodward, 77, died June 12, 2017, in Connecticut. She was the widow of Robert Clark Woodward.  

Barbara was born Jan. 31, 1940, in New Orleans, La., the daughter of Laura (Fenner) and Claude Miller Williams. 

She attended Newman School and Newcomb College. She taught elementary school in New Orleans before meeting Robert and moving to New England. She married Robert in 1965, and they moved to Cambridge and then Weston, Mass., where they lived until 1999, when they retired and moved to Lakeville. 

Ellen Mary Turner

MILLERTON — Ellen Mary Turner, 68, formerly of Poughkeepsie and Long Island, N.Y., died Sept. 6, 2017, at home after battling cancer. She was the wife of Thomas Rick Turner.

Ellen was born on Dec.7, 1948, the daughter of Kathleen (Murphy) and Anthony DiVeto. 

On Dec. 30, 1972, in Lindenhurst, N.Y., she married Rick. In 1974, they moved to Poughkeepsie, where they resided for 36 years. For many years, Ellen was an English teacher at the Dover Middle School. 

She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and her beloved dogs. 

Emogene ‘Gene’ Chase Wilhelm

PINE PLAINS — Emogene “Gene” Chase Wilhelm, 81, of Greenwich, Conn., died at home with her family on Sept. 3, 2017, two days after celebrating her 60th wedding anniversary.  

Gene was born in New York City on Nov. 11, 1935, and raised in Pine Plains by her parents, Claire (Farley) and Kenneth Chase.  

She graduated with honors from Simmons College in 1957 before marrying Gayle Brian Wilhelm that same year.  

Katherine M. Cooper

AMENIA — Katherine M. Cooper, 103, a lifelong resident of Amenia, died Sept. 8, 2017, at Sharon Health Care Center. 

Mrs. Cooper was the head dining room attendant at the Wassaic Developmental Center for 28 years, retiring in 1970.

Born on Oct. 15, 1913, in Marlboro, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Pauline (Donnes) and Peter Hammer. 

Thomas McAvoy

WASSAIC — Thomas McAvoy, 54, of Sinpatch Road, died Sept. 4, 2017, at Vassar Brothers Hospital. 

He is the son of Bernice June Valyou and the late James McAvoy.

Tom worked as a carpenter and garden landscaper in New York and Florida.

He loved family get-togethers, animals and wildlife.
