John Michael Degener


SHARON — John Michael Degener, 77, known as Michael, died March 20, 2011, while vacationing on the Caribbean island of Mustique in the West Indies. He suffered a fatal cardiac arrest while snorkeling off a reef on the Cotton House beach.

Born in New York City on July 11, 1933, Mr. Degener was the son of the late Nouche Lucien-Robert and George Ludwig Degener Jr.

Jean Snow


MILLERTON — Jean Snow, 90, formerly of Millerton, died peacefully on March 10, 2011, at Sharon Health Care Center. Her husband, William, predeceased her in 2004, while they were residing in Arizona. She was born in New York City on Oct. 11, 1920, to Fannie and John Bruscini.

She and her husband, “Bill,” came to Millerton in 1952 from Bronx, N.Y., after spending several summers at Taconic State Park with their three daughters.

Jo Anne Danforth


SHARON — Jo Anne Danforth, 74, of Dalton, Mass., died March 20, 2011, at her home. She was the widow of James R. Danforth, who died April 21, 2007. They married Sept. 12, 1959, at St. Bernard’s Church in Sharon.

She was born in Sharon on Feb. 26, 1937, a daughter of Margaret (Humeston) and William Pitcher. She was educated in Sharon and Falls Village schools, and was a 1955 graduate of Housatonic Valley Regional High School. She continued her education and, in 1958, graduated from the Henry W. Bishop Memorial School of Nursing in Pittsfield.

William Warren Bartlett


SALISBURY — William Warren Bartlett, 75, died suddenly on March 25, 2011, at his home in Chappaqua, N.Y. His wife, Francoise, passed away on March 7, 2011.

They married in 1960, lived most of their lives in Chappaqua and spent summers at their family camp on Mount Riga in Salisbury.

Bill was born on March 14, 1936, the son of Kathryn (Clark) and Lewis Hall Bartlett. His mother was a daughter of Raymond Clark, a physician practicing in Brooklyn, N.Y., and a longtime Mount Riga summer resident.

Joseph D. Mori

WINSTED — Joseph D. Mori, 90, formerly of 86 Maple St., died Thursday, March 17, 2011, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of the late Eleanor (Nash) Mori, who died last June.

Mildred H. Hubbard

WINSTED — Mildred H. “Millie” Hubbard, 88, of Chestnut Street, died March 17, 2011, at Yale New Haven Hospital, as the result of a ruptured aorta. She was the widow of George E. Hubbard, who died in 2003.

Born in Winsted on Jan. 15, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Mary (Brown) and Louis Boutin. She had lived here most of her life.

Margaret E. Giannatasio

WINSTED — Margaret E. Giannatasio, 93, of Chestnut Street, died March 20, 2011, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington following a short illness. She was the widow of Francis Giannatasio, who died in 1995.

Born in Winsted on July 14, 1917, she was daughter of the late Christina (Gentile) and Frederick Radocchio. She had lived here all of her life.

Constance E. Barber

WINSTED — Constance E. “Connie” Barber, 89, of Colebrook River Road, died March 20, 2011, at Laurel Hill Health Care, following a long illness. She was the wife of James J. Barber.

Helen Gomme Speed

SHARON — Helen Gomme Speed, 76, formerly of King Hill Road, died March 19, 2011, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington. She was the widow of Floyd Speed.

Helen was born in Sharon on June 2, 1934. She worked at Sharon Hospital for many years in housekeeping.

She is survived by her children, John, Floyd Jr., Caleen, Gary and Gene; a sister, Pearl; a brother, Ernest; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Services were held March 23 at the Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon. Burial will be private in the spring.

Giuseppe Mirto

PINE PLAINS — Giuseppe Mirto, 86, died March 17, 2011, at his home in Pine Plains, surrounded by his loving family.

Born Oct. 23, 1924 in Monreale, Sicily, he was the son of the late Rosalia (Salvia) and Nicolo Mirto.

On July 29, 1951, in Italy, he married Antonina (Giordano) Mirto. She survives him at home.

He came to Brooklyn, N.Y., on June 15, 1965.

Mr. Mirto started Lia’s Mountain View Restaurant in Pine Plains in May 1983.
