Rita (Weisberg) Friedman

SALISBURY — Rita (Weisberg) Friedman, 88, died peacefully on Feb. 7, 2011, of heart failure after protracted respiratory illness.

She was the widow of Sidney Friedman and was his devoted wife until his death 10 years ago.

She was a retired teacher and co-author of “The Letter People,” an elementary school reading program still used by schools nationwide.

She is survived by her beloved son, Alan Friedman of New York City and Salisbury, and his wife, Marylene; and her grandchildren, Marc and David Aaron Friedman.

Robert M. Burrer

LIME ROCK — Robert M. Burrer, 79, one-time resident of Lime Rock and Ashley Falls and teacher at The Hotchkiss School, died Jan. 3, 2011, in Tampa, Fla., after a long decline.

Bob grew up in Greenfield, Mass., and was a graduate of Deerfield Academy (1951) and received a B.A. from Wesleyan University (1955) and an M.A. in 1956.

He began his teaching career at Deerfield and then taught studio art at Hotchkiss from 1964 to 1975, and renovated a large barn in Lime Rock as his residence.

John E. Crane

NORTH CANAAN — John E. Crane, 92, dedicated father, grandfather and great-grandfather, retired investment banker, avid golfer and Distinguished Flying Cross World War II veteran died peacefully in his sleep on Jan. 25, 2011, at Geer Village in North Canaan.

Mr. Crane was born in Richmond, Ind., on Aug. 14, 1918, to Bess and Myron Crane.

Norma (Silvernail) Dolan

KENT — Norma (Silvernail) Dolan, 82, died Feb. 2, 2011, at The Kent. She was the widow of Edward Dolan.

She was born July 28, 1928, in Bridgeport, Conn., to the late Hilda (Mohr) and Walter Silvernail. She graduated from Lauralton Hall in Milford, Conn., and was a member of the Germania Singing Society of Bridgeport.
